using a plaster cast of a figure instead of a dress maker’s mannequin to display the garment is inspired by broken marble sculptures of figures, often that have lost limbs/heads. i like the idea of the ‘figure’ underneath being ‘broken’ but being held together, repaired even, by this unusual structured garment, made from contrasting materials. the hook and eye seam is similar to stitches in flesh, and the top leather like structure seems to act as armour, like that on a turtle or insect even.
figures without limbs, white in colour, to be built upon. i think this is why i am interested in plaster casts, which before i have done of faces, feet and my own torso. i like the sense of absence.
